I'm sorry I didn't get this in sooner. I wanted to share a story about Rachel Shield's when she ran the Daycare center at Asbury Methodist Church. At that time I worked at U.S.Bank downtown and my then husband Darrell Nastasi managed the heights branch of U.S.Bank back in the early 80's. The girls who I waited for so long where approximately 3- 6 years old. I had taken them out and put them in a smaller private daycare and after a short time the lady dropped them over a weekend. I was paniced as I had job responsibilities for my family, I called Rachel Shields and she easied my mind and took the girls back right away. I believe, to this day that they benefited from the experiences at the church daycare. They both grew up to be great moms, workers, people and contributing members of society. They haven't had it at all easy with a lot of uprooting and difficulties in life as we all have. I think I worked for their daycare costs but gave them more social experiences that perhaps helped them deal with a lot of different people/worlds and an understanding of life. I saw Rachel at my sister Sharon's re-marriage a few years ago and she was surprised I recognized her. One never forgets a great person, kindness and consideration in life no matter how small you might think it is. God Bless Rachel Shields and her family. Story shared: Farewell to the 91-year-old butt kicker

After 91 butt-kicking years, my grandma, Rachel Shields, past away tonight surrounded by her family. She went peacefully after saying her goodbyes to everyone and in a way that respected her faith and dignity. I hope that all people have the same wonderful experience with death as I and my family did tonight. I want to thank Good Samaritan Hospital for following my grandmother's advanced directive. The staff made sure that she was comfortable and not in pain in her last moments. I also want to thank my mother for being a rock for the entire family in these trying times (and for giving me orders for the past two days so I too could remain balanced). I hope I can be as brave as Rachel Babe when in my last minutes in life. She will be missed, but I am so glad to have known her. Rest in Peace.

Rachel was such a strong woman whose energy contributed so much to helping women and children. She had a deep love of her family. I knew her thru water aerobics and enjoyed her humor. She was an inspiration.

When we moved to Hood River Rachel was one of the first persons who came up to our family and introduced herself and daughter Karmel. She will always have a special place in my heart along with her family. Know that she has so many stars in her crown in heaven. My heart goes out to your family.

Rachel is a wonderful woman I will always remember and always think about. I have a special memory of her guidance to me at Camp Morrow one time and will never forget it. I know she will be missed dearly physically but will live on forever in our memories.

Our dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother passed away Friday, July 19 at 7:00pm. It can be said, it was a good passing with all her children and many of her grandchildren in her room when she left this world for her heavenly home. Not knowing what her night before had been like, when we entered the room the morning of the 19th, she announced, in a clear voice, that "today" was the day she was going to die. Direct, firm, and in no uncertain terms she repeated herself to us and others. She talked of being tired and wanting to go home. When I asked if home meant my house, Hood River, or her heavenly home, she looked at me somewhat perturbed with a response of “heavenly home” as if I had forgotten all of my biblical teachings. She was right of course, but I had not forgotten, I just needed to be sure. One by one, as family came together, Mom talked with each person most times with a specific directive just for them. Each directive and ‘love you’ was followed with a wave goodbye. She also had a command to all of us to ‘behave’ and love each other. We all agreed we got the ‘love each other’ part down pretty good, but we couldn’t say the same for the behave part. As we struggled with our new realty, we also renewed our commitment to Mom’s directive. If it could not be the quality life that she had come enjoy with her friends at Down Manor, her First Baptist Church family, her water aerobics and sports club buddies, and her ability to live an independent life, then it should be no more. Comfort care was the choice, no longer prolonging her life by any artificial means. To her repeated refrains of “Let me go” we remained true to the collective commitment to see this through. At 91 years, plus 4 days, she was true to her morning declaration and she went home. We are all tremendously sad and we will miss her oh so very much. The grief and the sorrow are sometimes unbearable. But we are Rachel’s children and we did as we were told. We do love each other and we will do our best to behave.
