Camille, Sally, Jim, Susie and David, I was so sorry to hear of John's passing. Although we did not stay in touch over the years, I rarely pass the mill and the "rock pile" in Prairie City without thinking of your family's house, (my second home) and all the grade school high jinx John and I would get into with our bikes and those motorcycles. The memories live on from staying in your cabin up Dixie Creek or rocking out to Grand Funk Railroad's, "We're an American Band" in Jim's orange Mustang on the way to work in the Oxbow's hayfields. The obituary was perfect, so there is little to add. John was a truly gifted artist, gentle person, and caring soul whose smile was as soft and bright as you will ever see. I'm sorry we couldn't be there today, but our thoughts and payers are. David and Annie Cary

Story shared: Work created by a happy spirit

Uncle John was the first person to ever show me a Navajo rug. It must have been in 2001 when I last visited Dave and John at their home and studio in Hood River, Oregon. I dont remember exactly what the rug looked like, but two details from this experience stick out. First, the rug had been in Uncle Johns family for a few generations, so this was a special, treasured family heirloom. Second, he explained to me that some Navajo craftspeople deliberately wove mistakes into their work in order to release the weavers spirit. This particular rug had one. Some people refer to this as a weavers path or a spirit line. In essence, a part of the weavers soul is introduced into the rug itself. The weavers path is a way for the weavers soul or spirit to escape the work when it is finished. In that manner, the soul never risks becoming trapped in the work. It was only thanks to Uncle John that I had ever seen or heard about this. Uncle John was one of the kindest and happiest people I have ever met, happier and kinder even than his husband, Dave. John had indeed a happy spirit. He was also an artisan, and I would like to think that he put his soul into every work. I dont know if he deliberately sewed or introduced mistakes into every piece in order for his soul to escape, but I do like to think that a part of his happy spirit was always in there at some point. We miss you, Uncle John. And we love you, Uncle Dave. In courageously caring for your husband during his final years, you have continued a Wishart and a Bender family tradition. And in taking your husbands name, you are an inspirational pioneer. We are so exceptionally proud to now call you David Wishart. Thank you for taking care of our Uncle. John and David shared an interest in pubic street art.... yes, good graffiti. John asked me to make it look like this ROA (street artist from Ghent Belgium) creation was scratching his head. John could not believe that on this one wall there were so many of the best of the best street artists represented. That block letter R to the right is a Ben Eine (benign). President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama had a Ben Eine hanging in the white house.

John quietly saying I love you using ASL while working for Elizabeth Haycox (aka "The Queen of Hay-on-Wye, Wales.... according to The Times UK and anyone that's had the fortune to meet her and witness how she and her husband Paul Greatbatch have lovingly transformed the most amazing book store you would ever hope to visit into something truly spectacular). John using ASL because it is a book store after all.

My memories of John start when I was very young and enjoyed summers in Hood River where John was always off Wind Surfing. As his young cousin, I remember thinking "this guy is so cool." He was always kind and attentive, always interested in how others were doing in their lives. His life and legacy could not better summed up then in his obituary. He was gentle and true joy to be around, he will be missed dearly. Ken and I send our love and thoughts of peace to Dave, Aunt Camilla and my cousins.

Seeing a box of monkeys John knowing fabric picked Boo Boo because he was assembled with his fur upsidedown in a huge box of monkeys he spotted the adorable flaw...then he sent me back to get one more and he became known as Lucky because he was lucky to have been chosen

John, David, David's brother Robert and me, Tom Mciver. Robert and I had driven across the country from Minneapolis to celebrate my becoming a citizen. This was the only time I met John, yet he left such an impression that I felt I had known him forever. He was truly the nicest of men.
