I will always remember the passion with which Nellie spoke up about issues important to labor during the Washington County Democrats' meetings in the 1980s. We miss you.

I was a fundraiser/campaign manager for Demo pols from 1982 to 1998. Nellie was great to work with. Very supportive and kind. She always said that she had a soft spot in her heart for me because she thought I looked like her daughter - I think maybe Ronell. I'm certain the family has many wonderful memories that will sustain you.

One summer we did a girls road trip through the state of Washington up to the Olympic National Park. Granny called it her "Thelma and Louise" Trip because she'd heard of the movie, but never seen it. In fact she couldn't watch a movie all the way through -- she preferred the quick pace of news. So she had no idea that in Thelma and Louise, there are two women not three, and they drive off a cliff!

In the first year as State President of the AARP Oregon office she met Hugh Sowers, who would become a life long friend and companion. I first noticed something was happening when Hugh, who used to come to the office earlier than other volunteers, didn't ask for me to fix him toast and coffee because he hadn't eaten prior to arriving. Then, Nellie approached me shortly thereafter and asked me if I could print out a photo we had of Hugh. Aha! I said, we have a romance developing here. And sure enough, Hugh and Nellie had some great times together. Nellie and I talked about being the first ones in our families to divorce and how difficult a transition that was then as compared to now--but obviously she made the best of everything and was such a role model for many young women like myself. We will miss you Nellie. Pam

Nellie was so kind to Jerry and me when we first relocated to Oregon when he took his job as State Director of AARP. Nellie was a guide, a mentor and a friend. Her influence was vast and I am grateful that I had a chance to have her in my life.
